Blueberries and Chocolate? For Real? Ok, I know this sounds a bit strange and you’re probably thinking, no way. I am sure you’ve had strawberries dipped in chocolate, or maybe a dark chocolate raspberry truffle? But blueberries and chocolate in a smoothie might be pushing it.
Kind of what I thought too when I spotted this recipe for a smoothie on pinterest. Blueberries, chia, spinach, cocoa nibs, almond butter, almond milk, pinch of pink himalayan salt, and for a bit of sweetness, 1/2 of a banana. I said to myself, “I am not so sure…….wouldn’t it be kind of a weird mess”.
Remember my freezer full of wild blueberries I wrote about in an earlier post? Truth is, I have been bit stuck on my Blueberry Cheesecake Smoothie so I decided to try something different…..but blueberries and chocolate….hmmmmm?
I don’t mean to judge anyone or claim I am an expert at making smoothies, but I do have some pretty strong opinions of a lot of things. For instance, Strawberries and Chocolate (yes) liver and onions (no thanks, not a liver fan) running the wrong way in a race (once is enough) and how many times can I say “I love you” in a day (pretty much no limit, what kind of question is that?).
So maybe I am a bit of a Smoothie snob? Not really, it’s just that I used to think making a smoothie was a very specific thing; one or two fruits/veggies, mixed with a liquid (water or milk), a touch of sweetness, and some add-ons (e.g., chia seed) if desired. But a smoothie with blueberries, banana, spinach? Cocoa? Almond butter, chia seeds, milk, and salt? Seriously…. a Smoothie Mess!

WRONG! Delicious!!!!!!!!! You must try! So forget what I just said and PUT LOTS of STUFF in your smoothie! In fact, let’s put cocoa and blueberries in everything. Except my mom’s Blueberry pie

I’ve discovered, blueberries and chocolate are one of those combinations that seem like they were meant to be. Tart berries and sweet chocolate…..what a complimentary pair! The banana gave this smoothie a thicker consistency so it’s like a thick milkshake!
I am obsessed with this smoothie! It tastes like a chocolatey, blueberry, almond buttery heaven and is packed with protein! I drink this in the morning for breakfast after my runs! I bet it would be good for dinner too when you’re too tired to cook. Desert for dinner….Yep I can. Seriously, can I just say this is even extra delicious sprinkled with raw cacao nibs on top!

1/2 frozen banana
