Did you know November is Meyer Lemon Season? I did not, but when I saw my friend share this smoothie recipe and mention Meyer lemon season is beginning soon, I knew I had to try it! I am hooked.
It’s mostly tart, but not too tart that your lips pucker up when you sip on it. Just the right kind of tart. A bit sweet, but mostly tart. Do you know what I mean, or am I confusing you?
Let me explain. Meyer lemons are not near as tart as a real lemon. Do you know why? I learned something new…..a Meyer lemon is a cross between a lemon and an mandarin orange. I had no idea! I found this BIG bag of Meyer lemons at Costco over the weekend and on the bag they actually had this written. “Meyer Lemons, Cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange”.
Since oranges are often a bit sweet, this would explain why Meyer lemons are not as tart and an ordinary lemon. I still wasn’t sure I believed what was actually written on the bag, so I asked my my culinary and baking expert, my mom?. She hadn’t heard of it either. She said, “why don’t we check the Food Lover’s Companion book!” Ha….good idea.
So I learned something new! A Meyer Lemon is a cross between a lemon & a mandarin orange. Trust me on this one…..they are delicious in this smoothie!
I added blueberries to my smoothie since you probably remember from an earlier post, I have oodles of them in my freezer. However, don’t panic, this is just as delicious without blueberries.
I know for a fact, I’ll be making this smoothie several times a week! In fact, I don’t want Meyer lemon season to end! Luckily I grabbed a couple bags of Meyer Lemons at Costco so I’ve been making this smoothie every morning since. Some mornings with wild blueberries, and some mornings without. I am still deciding which variation is my favorite. Today I added a banana, a handful of blueberries, and instead of using vanilla protein, I used chocolate. Who says you can’t have chocolate with blueberries (and lemon). Obviously not me?. My husband even asked….“this is delicious…what did you do different today?” Seriously…it’s soooooo yummy and refreshing.
I happen to love lemon and this combination is AMAZING. If my husband notices, I know I’ve done something right! Have I convinced you to try it yet? I hope so.
